Ōtāhuhu-Mangere Ward Safer Communities Project

The ‘Ōtāhuhu-Mangere Ward Safer Communities Project’ is a creative journey. This creative journey invites five aspiring filmmakers aged between 17 and 25 who reside within the Otahuhu-Mangere Ward to experience the behind-the-scenes world of filmmaking. Over 7 weeks and spanning 4 workshops, 5 participants will be guided by Jessie Gibson, a distinguished Film School graduate and seasoned freelance Director and Cameraman. There will also be a day of filming in the field with Industry professionals to see how a professional crew operates. Jessie and others will introduce our young filmmakers to the foundational skills of filmmaking. From the theory behind the lens to the practicalities of directing and shooting.

The workshops are set to unfold in the Mangere Arts Center’s inspirational space, offering an ideal backdrop for learning and creativity. Hinge Productions will provide an office space for the projects to be workshopped, ensuring participants have a conducive environment for learning and creativity.

The ultimate goal of these workshops is to equip each participant with the necessary skills to direct and produce a 4-5 minute video. These videos will explore their unique perspectives on what makes a community safer, turning their insights into compelling visual stories that inspire thoughts and change.

This is not just a learning opportunity; it’s a chance to make a real impact. The participants’ final projects will be showcased at a public screening, offering them a platform to share their vision with the wider community. The finished projects will be shown on the 28th of June to an audience of interested parties and families.
